Furong, the town that sits on a waterfall

Furong’s claim is simple: the old town is built on top of a two-tier waterfall that pours through it into the You River. It was called Wangcun until the 1986 film Furong Town was shot here and the name stuck. At 24 minutes from Zhangjiajie West station, it is the easiest add-on to a Zhangjiajie trip.

Why it is worth half a day — or a night

  • A walkway runs behind the waterfall; it is open and included in the ticket (you are re-scanned at a second gate). Seeing the curtain of water from behind is the view you cannot get anywhere else.
  • The town lights come on at 18:20 in October (around 19:30 in summer) and stay on until midnight. The lit waterfall and stilt houses are the famous picture, so the late afternoon into evening is the slot to plan for.
  • A day trip works: watch the lights, then take a train back to Zhangjiajie West between 21:30 and 22:00.
  • If you stay, there are three kinds of place: inns inside the old town overlooking the falls (the water is loud all night — some love it), ordinary stilt-house guesthouses inside the town, and hotels on flat ground outside it. Expect stairs between the drop-off point and the inns.
