When travellers say “Zhangjiajie” they usually mean this place. The actual city of Zhangjiajie, with the airport, the railway station and Tianmen Mountain, is about 40 km away. Geologists named the landform after the city — “Zhangjiajie landform” was adopted internationally in 2010 — and the area was among the first Global Geoparks in 2004. For you the decision is simpler: where to sleep, and which gate to enter.
Stay in the town
Wulingyuan town sits just outside the East Gate (the “landmark gate”), five to ten minutes from the ticket office by car. On your park days this is the place to be: in at opening, out at dusk and back at the hotel minutes later. The airport is about 40 km and 40–50 minutes away; Zhangjiajie West railway station about 25 km and 30–40 minutes. There is a public bus from the bus station beside the West station. For the Tianmen Mountain day, or an early train, the city is the better base — see the overview for how the two fit together.
The town has two things to do after dark. The Charming Xiangxi show plays in its own theatre a few minutes’ drive from any hotel, nightly, usually from 19:30 with a second performance in high season, tickets ¥168–308 depending on seat. Since November 2025 a drone show of two thousand drones has flown over the Suoxi River: the district’s 2026 notice makes it a regular fixture on the May Day, summer, National Day and Spring Festival holidays and on selected dates through the year — after dark, about fifteen minutes, with the day’s showing confirmed locally. Prices and timetables last checked October 2026; they change — treat them as a guide, not a quote.
Three days, done right
- Day 1 — in at the East Gate, straight across the park. Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie, the Hallelujah pillar and the First Bridge, shuttle bus across to Tianzi Mountain for He Long Park and the West Sea, Tianzi cable car down, bus out. This is the day we would plan first.
- Day 2 — the slower day. Huangshizhai or Golden Whip Stream — or both if you start early; the stream is a flat walk of two to three hours. Finish with the little train through the Ten-Mile Gallery.
- Day 3 — outside the park. Half a day at the Grand Canyon glass bridge, 20–45 minutes away. On a wet day swap it for Huanglong Cave, about 20 minutes from town: an underground river system 7,640 m long with 3,200 m open on four levels, famous for a 19.2 m stalagmite called the Sea-Calming Needle; about two hours, around ¥118. Baofeng Lake is a mountain lake with a 20–30 minute boat ride and Tujia folk singers on the water.
- Day 4 belongs to Tianmen Mountain, and for that night the city is more convenient.
What the one ticket covers
¥165, valid for four consecutive days counted from your first entry; the in-park shuttle bus is another ¥72, or ¥236 as a combined ticket. Five gates, each entry booked for a gate and a time slot. The ticket does not cover Tianmen Mountain, the glass bridge, Huanglong Cave or Baofeng Lake — each has its own. Details, gates and the one-day route are on the forest park page.
Rain
The park stays open in rain, and the hours after rain are when the cloud sits low among the pillars and the place looks the way it does in photographs. Only in a real downpour swap the mountain for the cave or the lake; both are minutes from town. Month by month on the weather page.
