Zhangjiajie Hunan Guide

Planning

Zhangjiajie weather, month by month

Zhangjiajie is open all year; what changes is which mountains you see — the cloud seas after spring and summer rain, the clear air of autumn, the occasional snow and rime of winter. The table uses China Meteorological Administration 1991–2020 normals for the city station (219 m); the last column is what that means up in the park.

These are city figures. The viewing platforms — Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, the top of Tianmen — feel five to eight degrees cooler in rain and in winter. Bring a jacket in any month.

Three things that decide how you plan

Rain is good news

The pillars get their depth from moisture: the sea of cloud that rises from the valleys after rain is the most famous view here, and most “floating mountain” photographs were taken the morning after a wet night. If rain is forecast, do not change your dates — change the order. Walk the valleys (Golden Whip Stream, Ten-Mile Gallery, Huanglong Cave) on the rainy day and go up to the cliff tops the morning it clears.

Two weeks to avoid

Crowds here follow Chinese holidays, not the weather. The National Day holiday, 1–7 October, is the busiest week of the year (in 2026 the park opened its gates at 06:30 and rationed the cable cars and lift). The week around Chinese New Year — 6 February 2027 — is the other. Both are still possible; book early and enter the park first thing.

Winter notes

On snow and ice days Tianmen Mountain runs only Route C — which, since 13 October 2026, is the only route anyway — and the 999 steps to the cave become slippery. Cable-car winter maintenance is announced by each park for the year; check before you go.

When is the best time?

  • Most comfortable: late April to May, and late September to mid-October (skipping 1–7 October).
  • For cloud seas: April to June and September, the clear morning after rain.
  • For quiet and lower prices: November, early December and January outside the New Year week.

What to wear

A waterproof jacket in every season — on the summits a raincoat beats an umbrella because of the wind. Add a layer in spring and autumn; gloves, a hat and grippy shoes in winter; sun protection and a change of clothes in summer.

Quick answers

Which month has the most rain in Zhangjiajie?

July (227 mm) and June (220 mm). May has the most rainy days (16). The mornings after rain are the best time for cloud seas.

Does it snow in Zhangjiajie in December?

Occasionally, mostly late in the month. December averages 1.7 snow days and January 5. Snow is more likely up in the park than in the city.

Can you go up the mountains in the rain?

Yes. Light rain does not close anything, and the hour or two after it stops is the cloud-sea window. On heavy-rain days walk the valleys instead.

What is the most comfortable month to visit?

October, outside the 1–7 October holiday, and April–May.
