Planning

How many days do you need in Zhangjiajie?

Three days is the floor: two in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and one on Tianmen Mountain. Four days adds the Grand Canyon glass bridge. Five or more adds Fenghuang or Furong Town, each a day and a night. Count full days inside the scenic areas, not nights in a hotel: people who have done it say an afternoon arrival is not a day.

What each place takes

The forest park needs one day for the core and two to see it properly. Tianmen Mountain takes four to six hours door to door, on Route C only since 13 October 2026. The glass bridge is half a day, Huanglong Cave about two hours, Baofeng Lake half a day with the drive. Furong Town and Fenghuang are each a day, and both are worth a night.

Two days

Two days is one standard route through the forest park plus Tianmen Mountain, and both days start at opening time. Day one: East Gate, Bailong Elevator up, Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, cable car down. Day two: Tianmen Mountain, Route C, four to six hours. The glass bridge does not fit.

  • Day 1 — the forest park. East Gate, Bailong Elevator up, the Yuanjiajie cliff path, shuttle bus to Tianzi Mountain, Tianzi cable car down. This is the one-day route on the park page.
  • Day 2 — Tianmen Mountain. Route C, morning start: express cableway to the cave, escalators to the summit, same way down.
  • Sleep in Wulingyuan town both nights and drive to Tianmen Mountain on the second morning, about 40 km and 40–50 minutes. Two days is not enough to be worth changing hotels.

Visitors who did it in two days say the same three things: be at the gate when it opens; the cliff-top viewpoints start to look alike after the third one, so pick one or two rather than all of them; and if a second park day is possible, Golden Whip Stream in the valley is the stretch most of them rated highest.

Three days

Three days is the most common plan: two in the forest park and one on Tianmen Mountain. Day one on the cliff tops, Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain. Day two on the valley floor, Golden Whip Stream or Huangshizhai, then the little train through the Ten-Mile Gallery. Day three on Tianmen Mountain, sleeping in the city that night.

  • Day 1 — the cliff tops. In at the East Gate and straight across the park: Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie, the Hallelujah pillar and the First Bridge, shuttle bus to Tianzi Mountain for He Long Park and the West Sea, Tianzi cable car down. Plan this day first.
  • Day 2 — the valley. Huangshizhai or Golden Whip Stream — or both if you start early; the stream is a flat walk of two to three hours. Finish with the Ten-Mile Gallery train.
  • Day 3 — Tianmen Mountain. Route C. Sleep in the city that night if you have an early train or flight the next morning.
  • Nights: two in Wulingyuan town and one in the city, or all three in Wulingyuan if nothing early is being caught. The where-to-stay page has the split by trip length.
  • If you only have one day in the forest park, the order most people give is Yuanjiajie first, Tianzi Mountain second, and the rest as time allows.

Four days

Four days adds the Grand Canyon glass bridge: the morning of day three at the bridge, 20–45 minutes from Wulingyuan town, the afternoon back in town or on the way to the city, and day four on Tianmen Mountain. On a wet day swap the bridge for Huanglong Cave or Baofeng Lake, both minutes from town.

People travelling with children or parents almost all say the fourth day is worth more than the bridge itself: it is the day that absorbs rain, queues and a slower pace. If you have it, use it loosely.

Five and six days

Five days adds an old town. Furong Town is 23 minutes by train from Zhangjiajie West and Fenghuang about an hour; stay the night in either for the lights. Six days takes in both, in the order Zhangjiajie West → Furong Town → Fenghuang or the reverse. Furong Town has no morning train back; the first departure is around noon.

  • Furong Town — the town on a waterfall; ¥108, unlimited entries for three days. Eight trains a day, 23–25 minutes.
  • Fenghuang — the river town; free to enter, sights ticketed separately. Eleven trains a day, about an hour.
  • Both are on the Zhangjiajie–Jishou–Huaihua high-speed line, so you can leave Zhangjiajie by train and continue from the old town to Changsha or beyond.

Which order, and where the nights go

Two things fix the order. The park ticket is valid for four consecutive days, so the forest park days should run back to back. Tianmen Mountain is at the edge of the city, so it sits best on the first day after arrival or the last day before leaving. Sleep in Wulingyuan town for the park, in the city for Tianmen Mountain and for early trains and late flights.

On a three- or four-day trip, visitors almost all change hotel once: the arrival night or the Tianmen night in the city, the rest in Wulingyuan town. Those who changed twice say it cost more time than it saved. Details on the where-to-stay page.

If you arrive late, or it rains

A day that starts after four in the afternoon is not a day: sleep in Wulingyuan town and be at the gate at opening. Rain does not change the dates, only the order. Walk the valleys on the wet day — Golden Whip Stream, the Ten-Mile Gallery, Huanglong Cave — and go up to the cliff tops the morning after, when the cloud sits low among the pillars.

  • In high season book the park and the glass bridge a week or more ahead. The park ticket covers four days, but each day’s entry is a separate reservation for a gate and a time slot.
  • Fog on Tianmen Mountain usually lifts later in the morning; visitors report that going up a little later beats cancelling.
  • Expect ten to twenty thousand steps a day. The cliff paths are railed and mostly level; the steep parts are the optional stairs.
  • All prices are on the tickets page; a first visit to the big five costs about ¥1,080 a person in tickets alone. Prices and timetables last checked October 2026; they change — treat them as a guide, not a quote.

Quick answers

Is 2 days enough for Zhangjiajie?

Enough for one standard route through the forest park and Tianmen Mountain, with both days starting at opening. Not enough for the glass bridge. Three days is comfortable.

How many days for Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?

One day for the core — Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain — and two to see it properly. The ticket is valid for four consecutive days.

Can I do Tianmen Mountain and the forest park in one day?

No. They are about 40 km apart and each needs a full day. Tianmen Mountain alone takes four to six hours.

Is 3 days enough for Zhangjiajie?

Yes. Two days in the forest park and one on Tianmen Mountain is the most common plan.

How many days with Fenghuang?

Add a day and a night: five days in all. Fenghuang is about an hour by train from Zhangjiajie West.

Should I count my arrival day?

Only if you arrive in the morning. An afternoon arrival is for getting to Wulingyuan town and sleeping; a morning arrival can take in Golden Whip Stream.

How much walking is it?

Visitors record ten to twenty thousand steps a day. The cliff-top paths are railed and mostly level; the stairs are optional.
