Why these three days
Zhangjiajie is big, vertical and spread over two mountain areas, and the usual mistake is to try to see it in a day. Three days let the group do each part properly and in the right order: the cliff tops first, when the morning cloud is still lifting off the pillars; the arch and the glass walkways on their own day; and the gentle valley walk and the bridge last, when legs have earned a flat path. Everything that needs a ticket, a time slot or a bus is arranged before you arrive, so the days are spent looking, not queuing or working out where the next shuttle goes.
- The Hallelujah pillar, the column that became the floating mountains of Avatar, and the First Bridge Under Heaven, a natural rock arch between two pillar tops
- The Bailong Elevator, a glass lift up 326 metres of cliff in about a minute and a half, with the pillar forest opening out beside you
- Tianzi Mountain, the highest viewpoints over the whole landscape, and the cable car ride down through it
- Tianmen Cave, an arch 131 metres high in the cliff, and the summit walkways with three glass sections hung over the drop
- Golden Whip Stream, 7.5 km of level path along clear water with the pillars rising on both sides, and the macaques that live there
- The glass bridge, 430 metres across and 300 metres above the canyon floor, with the canyon walk and the boat out
Day by day
Day 1 · The Forest Park from the top
Pick-up from hotels in Wulingyuan town at 08:00 and in through the east gate (Wujiayu), the gate this route is booked for. A shuttle bus takes the group to the Bailong Elevator, which climbs the cliff in about a minute and a half. At the top is Yuanjiajie: the Lost Soul Platform, the Hallelujah pillar and the First Bridge Under Heaven, on railed walkways that are mostly flat, one to three hours. If time and crowds allow, the shuttle stops at Yangjiajie’s Natural Great Wall on the way to Tianzi Mountain and its viewpoints around Helong Park; Yangjiajie is not promised. The Tianzi cable car brings the group down (a little over six minutes), the Ten-Mile Gallery train runs out and back along the valley, and the group leaves by the east gate at about 16:30. The group rides the elevator first thing, while it is quiet: by late morning on busy weekends the wait there can run to an hour, and the early start puts the whole day ahead of it.
Lunch is your own, from the snack stalls on Tianzi Mountain (about ¥30–60). The east gate runs fixed routes; this one is the “elevator up, cable car down” route, which is why the whole day runs in one direction.
Day 2 · Tianmen Mountain
Leave Wulingyuan at 08:00 for the 40 km (40–50 minutes) to the cableway station in the city, then the free shuttle bus, about 20 minutes, to the mountain gate. The express cableway goes up to the mouth of Tianmen Cave. From the foot of the cave you can climb the 999 steps or take the five-stage escalator (¥32, paid there). Above the cave, the seven-stage escalator through the mountain — included in the ticket — reaches the summit, where the cliff walkways make a loop; the three glass sections are open and shoe covers cost ¥5. Back down the same cableway, in the city by 15:00–16:00, and in Wulingyuan at about 17:00. Four to six hours on the mountain. With everyone now using the one express cableway, the early start pays off twice: the group is on the mountain before the mid-morning flow builds at the gate, and heads down in the early afternoon ahead of the return rush, so the day goes on the walkways rather than in a line. The summit is 6–10 °C cooler than the city, which is part of the pleasure in summer; bring a windproof layer and shoes with grip.
Since 13 October 2026 Tianmen Mountain’s main cableway has been closed for an upgrade and only this route, Line C, is running: no main cableway and no 99-bend road. The ticket price has not changed. Local guides expect the rebuild to take a year or more; if the main cableway reopens we will rewrite this paragraph, and the tour does not change. Details are on the Tianmen Mountain page.
Evening, optional: the Charming Xiangxi song-and-dance show in Wulingyuan town. We can book it for you (zone B ¥198); tell us a day ahead.
Day 3 · The valley floor, then the glass bridge
08:00 from the hotel to the south gate (the Forest Park gate) and the Oxygen Bar square. Golden Whip Stream is about 7.5 km of nearly level path along the water between the pillars, two to three hours: Golden Whip Rock, Zicao Pool, the Meeting of a Thousand Miles, and the Four Waters junction, where a shuttle takes the group out through the east gate. Lunch is your own in Wulingyuan town. Then about 30 km (20–45 minutes) to Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon: the 430-metre glass bridge, then the steps down to the canyon floor, which are worth every one: about 3.5 km of boardwalk along the stream at the bottom, with waterfalls off the cliff and far fewer people than on the bridge, and the boat out across the lake, two and a half to three hours in all. The zipline, the slide and the other paid activities at the bridge are optional and can be added on the spot; the tour leaves time for them rather than building them in. Out of the park at about 16:00; at your hotel in Wulingyuan at about 16:30, or at Zhangjiajie West station at about 17:15.
If you are leaving the same day, book a train from Zhangjiajie West at 18:00 or later. Day 3 re-enters the Forest Park on the same four-day ticket as day 1, with a separate time slot booked for the south gate.
Golden Whip Stream has a resident troop of macaques, and they are one of the pleasures of the walk as long as the rules are followed: food zipped away inside a bag, nothing carried loose in the hand, and no feeding. The guide will remind everyone before the path starts.

How to book
Email [email protected] with the departure date you want, how many people, the names exactly as they appear on your passports (park tickets are issued by name), and where you are staying in Wulingyuan town. We reply by email to confirm whether places are available. A deposit of 20% holds your places; the balance is due after the departure is confirmed, seven days before. Payment is by a card-payment link we send you (a 3% card fee applies) or by Alipay.
Who it suits
An ordinary level of fitness is enough. Expect 3–8 km of walking a day, with steps: Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain are mostly level walkways with stairs between viewpoints, Tianmen Mountain is done by cableway and escalator with flat walkways on top, Golden Whip Stream is 7.5 km of flat path, and the Grand Canyon has flights of steps down to the floor. The pace is a group of ten, not a tour bus: there is time to stop, and the guide sets the day so that the longest walking comes on the flattest ground. Children are welcome; on day 3 the guide can shorten the stream walk for small ones by turning back at the Meeting of a Thousand Miles. If stairs are a real difficulty, the guide pages on this site show the gentler ways to see the same places.
If anyone is unwell, the guide knows the nearest clinics and hospitals in Wulingyuan and the city, can call them and can translate. All guides on this tour have done first-aid training.
Weather and changes
Rain is not bad news here: the hour after it stops is when cloud fills the valleys and the pillars appear to float, which is the photograph everyone wants. The Forest Park opens in rain. Cable cars and the elevator pause in thunderstorms, high wind and ice; when that happens the guide switches to another area, or to Yellow Dragon Cave or Baofeng Lake, at no extra cost. Tianmen Mountain follows the scenic area’s own decisions in snow and fog. Scenic-area rules change, and the order of the days may change with them. Three things do not: what you see, what is included, and the price.
Ticket prices and opening arrangements last checked October 2026. They change; the tour price does not.
