Planning

Where to stay in Zhangjiajie: the town by the park, or the city?

Zhangjiajie has two places to sleep, about 40 km and 40–50 minutes apart. Wulingyuan town sits outside the East Gate of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: sleep there on your park days. Zhangjiajie city has the Tianmen Mountain cableway station, the airport and the railway station: sleep there for your Tianmen day and the night before an early train. On a three- or four-day trip the usual split is two or three nights in Wulingyuan and one in the city.

Wulingyuan town: for the park days

Wulingyuan town sits just outside the East Gate, five to ten minutes from the ticket office by car. On park days this is where to be: in at opening, out at dusk, back at the hotel minutes later. The airport is about 40 km and 40–50 minutes away, Zhangjiajie West station about 25 km and 30–40 minutes. The town has the Charming Xiangxi show and, on major holidays, the drone show over the Suoxi River.

The one thing to check before booking is the distance to the East Gate ticket office, measured on a map rather than read from the hotel’s name. Visitors who have stayed here repeat two things: stay within walking distance of the gate, because taxis are hard to find in the town early in the morning; and expect room rates noticeably higher than in the city for the same class, higher again on holidays, though locally run guesthouses are plentiful. The town has a food street and a riverside path; after dark, that and the shows are what there is.

  • Which gate your hotel is closest to decides your first morning: the park map page matches hotels to gates.
  • Charming Xiangxi plays nightly, usually from 19:30, tickets ¥168–308 by seat; the drone show flies on the May Day, summer, National Day and Spring Festival holidays and selected dates, about fifteen minutes after dark. Details on the Wulingyuan page.

Zhangjiajie city: for Tianmen Mountain and the trains

The city is the base for the Tianmen Mountain day: the cableway’s city station is in town and a free shuttle runs from it to the mountain gate in about 20 minutes. The airport is 5–6 km from the centre and Zhangjiajie West station about 10 km, so an early train or a late flight is easiest from here. After dark there is 72 Qilou.

People who want the first cableway of the morning look at one number only: minutes on foot to the Tianmen cableway city station. “Zhangjiajie city” is large, and a hotel that calls itself central can be half an hour by car from the station, so put the address on a map and read the walking time before you book. If the first cableway does not matter, two or three kilometres away is fine: taxis are easy in the city, and a driver can take you straight to the mountain gate.

Those who chose the city over Wulingyuan give the same reasons: ten minutes or so to the railway station, food delivery and local restaurants, and lower room rates. The price is an early start on the park day, with a 40–50 minute drive each way.

Other places people ask about

Around Zimugang, the Central Gate is the closest to the lower station of the Bailong Elevator. On the South Gate side, towards the city, Golden Whip Stream and Huangshizhai start at the gate. A few guesthouses sit in the hills on the South Gate side, and a few inside the park boundary where outside cars cannot drive; some visitors have stayed in both, but we have too few reports to recommend either. Fenghuang and Furong Town are each a night of their own, not a base for Zhangjiajie.

How to split the nights

TripNights
2 days2 nights in Wulingyuan town; drive to Tianmen Mountain on the second morning
3 days2 nights in Wulingyuan town + 1 night in the city for the Tianmen day; or all 3 in Wulingyuan if nothing early is being caught
4 days3 nights in Wulingyuan town + 1 night in the city
5–6 daysthe above, plus 1 night in Furong Town or Fenghuang

The nights follow the days: Wulingyuan for the park, the city for Tianmen Mountain and for early departures, the old towns for a night each. Visitors almost all change hotel once; those who changed twice say they would not again. The day-by-day plans are on the how-many-days page.

Getting between the two bases

Wulingyuan town to the city is about 40 km, 40–50 minutes by car. From the airport to Wulingyuan is about 40 km, 40–50 minutes and around ¥100 by taxi; from Zhangjiajie West to Wulingyuan about 25 km, 30–40 minutes, ¥60–90 by taxi or ¥13–15 by the coach from the bus station beside the station. There is also a public bus between the city and Wulingyuan. The getting-here page has the arrival details. Prices and timetables last checked October 2026; they change — treat them as a guide, not a quote.
